Various companies in Spain
Objective
To restore degraded spaces into a Regional Park, a protected natural area, inside Natura 2000.
Context
Several companies from the Madrid area had signed a voluntary agreement with the regional government (Environmental regional ministry) for the voluntary restoration of an additional hectare, corresponding to degraded areas into that region, swapping the chance to exploit this hectare. The aim of the restoration is to create new habitats in order to introduce new species in that Natura 2000 area.
Solution
Thanks to the nearby Jarama river, which gave its name to the Park, it was possible to create some lakes with islands and peninsulas, which are especially suited spaces for the development of the bank vegetation, allowing the revegetation with native bank vegetal. The restoration works were made in parallel with the extraction activities.
In 2018, the project was still on-going.
Result
That performance was planned with a 15 years length of time, and will give back to the environment, some extractive areas deserted before the creation of the legislation on natural spaces restoration, this will increase the diversity of species and habitats of this natural park. The restored areas were donated to the public administration for public use by the Community of Madrid.
