Basalt-Actien-Gesellschaft
Objective
In Central Europe the survival of the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata) depends on special conditions. In our cultural landscape these conditions can almost exclusively be found in quarries and sand pits.
Context
Since 1932, the Imhausen quarry has been delivering high quality aggregates for the building industry. The settlement of the yellow-bellied toad led to the classification of the quarry as a FFH-area.
Solution
In order to promote and preserve the living-conditions of the yellow-bellied toad, Basalt-Actien-Gesellschaft has binded itself by contract to
- preserving and caring for the yellow-bellied toads’ spawn waters
- installing/constructing dumps and excavated material, which give the yellow-bellied toad the possibility to overwinter undisturbed.
Result
Thanks to the careful procedures of Basalt-Actien-Gesellschaft in the quarry Imhausen, it has been possible to assure the reproduction of a local population of approximately 30 yellow-bellied toads.
