Holcim Granulats France

Holtzheim, Bas-Rhin, France

Objective

To promote educational knowledge and its teaching within an alluvial sand and gravel pit.

Context

The sand and gravel pit of Holtzeim is located in the Rhine plain of Alsace.

Two distinctive geological layers can be observed:

- the Rhine alluvia which are extracted under Rhine groundwater level with a floating dredge;

- the more recent Vosges alluvia extracted off water.

Solution

Several site visits are organised throughout the year. The different specificities of the deposit and the extraction activity are explained by adjusting the technicality level of the explanation to the audience.

Result

Every year, more than 400 students of all ages and from different background (high school, engineering school…) can learn about the quarry activities in its natural environment.
