Rudus Oy
Objective
To utilise the aggregates while preserving the area’s natural values and recreational opportunities.
Context
The extractive operations of Porvoo’s Kråkö area began in the 1930s. After a stop of activities during 43 years, the activities restarted in 2003 and a plan was drawn-up for recreational use of the area starting by an environmental assessment. The assessment revealed that a small pond was inhabited by the moor frog.
Actions
Rudus created an action plan which was presented to City of Porvoo and the environmental authorities for recreational use of the area.
Redistribution of moor frogs in the area. Two new ponds were built for the moor frog in addition to the existing one.
A rock pile was built in the area for the grass snakes and northern wheatear. Trees were removed from the sun-exposed slope and a deadwood environment was created.
Result
Moor frogs had moved into one of the new ponds. The results were positive and proved that active nature conservation is worthwhile. The studies will be continued annually.
