Objective

The Stone Curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus) is a rare migrant in danger of extinction. Only a small number of breeding pairs are nesting in Austria.

Context

The quarries of Rohrdorfer Baustoffe Austria have been offering an appropriate habitat to the Stone Curlew for many years due to their dry open areas with some bare ground.

Solution

In co-operation with BirdLife Austria, an organization for ornithology and the protection of birds, Rohrdorfer Baustoffe Austria supports the wildlife conservation programme and the creation of suitable habitats in particular during the breeding season between April and August.

Result

Within the last 10 years the population of Stone Curlew in the area of Lower Austria grew significantly.

In 2018, the project was still running with a continuous dialogue with NGOs and commissioned experts.
