Biodiversity assessment in Cyprus aggregates quarries

The effects of aggregates’ quarries on the environment is of great concern to the general public but also to the community of aggregates’ producers, given that we live in an era of global biodiversity loss. More and more data from the literature suggest that the effects of quarries on biodiversity is a complex issue, and the picture emerging shows that quarries play an important, often positive, role in shaping new biological communities at local scale. The situation in Cyprus remains largely unknown as no comparative evaluation of data from a large number of quarries, taking into account several biodiversity components, is available.
