Case Study

Basalt-Actien-Gesellschaft

Hinterplag Quarry, Linz am Rhein, Germany

Objective

Barren areas of renatured quarries enable the survival of many species, which you can find on the Red List, for instance the common spotted orchid (Dactylorhiza maculata agg.) or the centaury (Centaurium erythaceae), and many other species of flora and fauna.

Context

Up to its closure in the mid 1980s, the Hinterplag quarry supplied the Westerwald region with high-quality aggregates.

Solution

The area, very valuable concerning aspects of nature conservation, was assigned to the „Arbeitskreis Natur- und Umweltschutz Asbacher Land” for preservation and further development.

It contains different types of biotopes as steep rugged rocks, screes, nutrient-poor and stony soils, as well as areas of stagnant water.

Result

On a comparatively small total area of just 4 hectares, 223 species of higher plants could be identified. Among a number of reptiles, it should be mentioned in particular that 6 Redlisted species of bats have settled.
