Objective
The main objective was to develop an industrial process, respectful of the environment, which would create an ecosystem rich in animal and vegetal species, turning it into one of the most important Reserve of endangered birds in the Community of Madrid.
Context
“El Porcal” is a 459 hectares area, and is part of the sedimentary basin of the rivers Jarama and Manzanares.
Solution
The variety and quality of species that colonized the habitats created by the restoration has triggered the interest of fauna specialists.
During the winter season, at the lagoons, more than 100.000 black-headed gulls, coming from the North of Europe, can be observed.
The great cormorant, a bird that grows on the sea Cliff and feeds from fish, spends the Winter on this site. A survey indicates the number of 400 cormorants.
On this lagoons during the winter time are present to a thousand of aquatic birds, especially shovelers, common pochards, tufted ducks, and during the breeding season, red-crested pochards, mallards and great crested grebes.
Result
A natural park was created, for the benefit of future generations, where grey heron, storks, ducks, grebes, hares, wild pigs and many other species may live and breed in freedom.
The company has created a guided tour, with natural paths, bird watching sites and information about the natural species living in the area. The project is finalised and the site is now closed, the biodiversity values are still good or even better.
