Objective

Developing a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) for the Soto Pajares Quarry in a Natura 2000 site.

Context

The CEMEX Soto Pajares gravel extraction site (in San Martín de la Vega, Madrid) overlaps with an area that has multiple designations under European and national law for high biodiversity value. Maintaining an active extraction site within a Natura 2000 site potentially presents significant operational challenges.

Actions

To undertake a desk-based assessment of the site to get an initial idea of the biodiversity value of the site.

The adaptation and improvement of Soto Pajares facilities in order to increase its efficiency.

Collaborative studies of Fauna and Flora.

The launching of the Sustainability Commission for the Soto Pajares Quarry for the definition of the conservation strategies, discussion and exchange of information between the stakeholders and to guarantee the sustainability of the animal and flora species plus the local community.

Result

Increase in quality and extent of the habitat.

Increase in the flora population thanks to the tree transplantation carried out in cooperation with several organisations.

Increase and conservation of the breeding populations and migratory birds.

Track and monitoring database for a broad variety and number of species.
