Holcim Granulats Belgique
Objective
As part of its commitment to improve the biodiversity at the quarries, Holcim entrusted the Natagora association to manage the environmental planning of a 35 hectare zone located between the reserve area and the quarry.
Context
Holcim operates at a quarry of 150 hectares in Leffe, an area located in the town of Dinant. The site is located near a massive natural reserve zone called “Devant-Bouvignes” and has been classified as a “Natura 2000” area since 2005.
Solution
The Natagora’s members include recognized specialists on the management of natural areas. Their expertise enabled the carrying out a project which included the reintroduction of sheep into the area, sponsored by the “LIFE” European project. The sheep will preserve the quality of the limestone lawn. The trust granted to Natagora includes free use of the zone for 99 years.
Result
Today the calcareous ground vegetation of the “Devant-Bouvignes” area is one of the most remarkable in Belgium. Holcim contributes to the enhancement of biodiversity at quarries by development of new and different species of rare plants, butterflies, lizards and birds.
Partners
NATAGORA Association ( Robert Lambert ) and the city of Dinant.
