Case Study

Lafarge Granulats Seine-Nord (GIE St Nicolas)

Manche Est, France

Objective

To identify the areas which would allow the extraction of marine aggregates both in an environmental responsible way and taking into account the technical constraints.

Context

The surface of the area is 250km².

Solution

The fish stocks have been analysed with two methods:

- Ichthyoplankton were collected once per season;

- A professional fishing ship led experimental ledgering once per season.

A University laboratory was in charge of the sample collection, study and conclusions

The French National Centre for Scientific Research was in charge of the study and conclusions for the bio-sedimentary research. The research was carried out by a scientific ship on more than 50 sample collection stations.

The methods on this project are the ones standardized by the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea, a reference institution in France.

Result

The first lessons learnt from this project show that there is no specificities of the project area compared to reference sites in the Manche Sea.
