Case Study

ARICEMEX - CEMEX

Cantera “La Pasterasa”, Tarragona, Spain

Objective

The company carries out an integrated scenic restoration of the area directly affected by the exploitation, thanks to intensive reforestation.

Context

The quarry restoration works are compatible and simultaneous with the extractive activities, in such a way that before the exploitation of the calcareous body is fully completed, there will be an ecological recovering on large areas of the site.

Solution

During the 1990s, the company created a trees nursery. The plantation of trees, together with the insertion of mud coming from the Waste water treatment plant Torredembarra, promotes the growth of species. The company is also attending to a research project from the University of Cataluña.

Result

The noticeable recovering of the surroundings, while the exploitation of the land is progressing, showing a soft shape relief and a compact timber density. The project is finalised and the site is now closed. The biodiversity values are still good or even better.
