Lafarge Granulats Ouest

Objective

In partnership with Bretagne Vivante, a local environmental association, the Lafarge group has launched the Long term Biodiversity Index (IBL) programme, aiming at monitoring the evolution of biodiversity.

Context

The sandpit of Lauzach provides Pliocene sand for the concrete industry.

Since 2006, the “Bretagne Vivante” association has been working with the sand quarry and has been monitoring the evolution of humid areas and amphibians. In 2007, an inventory was made on the flora and fauna, and in particular on amphibians, in order to identify the species of the site and to implement a monitoring.

44 species were listed, including 8 rare species. The area has been considered as remarkable for its environmental properties.

Solution

1. Creation of ponds to develop the reproduction of amphibians (in partnership with “Bretagne vivante” association);

2. Active participation of “Bretagne vivante” into internal meetings of Lafarge;

3. Maintenance work from “Bretagne vivante” (mowing) to control the vegetation of the restored pond.

Today the association carries out a site monitoring and supervises the evolution of biodiversity.

Result

A growing awareness of environment protection among employees of the sand quarry.
