Case Study

Lafarge Granulats Ouest

Bodonou, Plouzané, France

Objective

In partnership with Bretagne Vivante, a local environmental association, the Lafarge group launched a programme, called IBL (Long term Biodiversity Index), which objective was to monitor the evolution of biodiversity.

Context

The sand quarry is located near Brest. Pliocene sand is extracted for the concrete industry.

Bretagne Vivante has been monitoring the sand quarry from an environmental perspective, and leads the site redevelopment. Since 2000, 65 bird species have been listed on the sand quarry site. The quarry site is used by birds for different purposes: daily rest (Northern Lapwing), breeding (Great Crested Grebe, Little Ringed Plover), overwintering (Western Marsh Harrier), or migration stops (waders). All of the 65 counted species are of interest, and include 50 protected species at the national level and 10 species listed in the Annex 1 of the “Birds” Directive.

Solution

Monitoring of the quality indexes, which are the water variations and the vegetation.

Result

A growing awareness of environment protection among employees of the sand quarry.

Improvement of the quality of site redevelopments.

Increase of the biodiversity of the site.

Partners

Bretagne Vivante, local environmental association.
