Objective

The objective was the rehabilitation of the Očura quarry, in order to improve the public perception of quarrying in Croatia.

Context

Since 1936 untill 2006, approximately 16 million tons of materials have been excavated here and until the late 70’s, the material was used as building material only. Later on, in the 80’s, the stone usage as raw material increased.

The quarry is composed of separate areas:

Očura l - 20 ha
Očura ll - 16 ha
Očura l and II are separated by the Eastern Reef. There was a requested additional area/zone plan change (Očura lll) of 11 ha.

Solution

The rehabilitation has been achieved through different phases, from April 2006 to May 2008:

In April 2006, excavating activities have finished on the three upper benches, and are still in progress in other areas.
In June 2006, technical revitalisation: walls, sloaps and benches are prepared
In October to December 2006, recultivation phase: topsoil and forrest humus from Očura II is used. 1.700 plants (Black pine 650, Hazelnut 350, Ivy 700) are planted.
In March 2008, connection of Očura I and Eastern Reef. The walls, sloaps and benches done.
Result

In May 2008, the final situation is of 21.000 plants (Black pine 10.500; Hazelnut 5.500; Ivy 5.000).
