Objective

Protection of red listed flowers.

Context

The quarry is 25 hectares, of which 13 are located in an area which contains red list flowers within a Natura 2000 area. In 2018, the project was still in action, being part of the rehabilitation programme of the company.

In 2017, there was a review of the agreed quality criteria for the first 10 years. All of the strict criteria were met and furthermore exceeded by 10-37%.

The recultivated/restored areas are designed - based on the typical model of the landscape - with small hills and dips. Every year, before new areas are excavated, the growing worth protecting plants are transplanted to already restored areas.

In the last years, dry grassland and a fen were transplanted. In the near future the company will transplant Nardus grasslands.

Solution

Restore typical countryside with artificial hills and dips;

Botanic evaluation in an area of 220 ha around mining licenses;

Transplantation of lawn parts.

Result

Annual monitoring shows possibility of protection and preservation of flora.
