Case Study

Procosanz Áridos S.A.

Gravera “El Castillo”, Talamanca del Jarama, Spain

Objective

The area where the company is located has the status of ZEPA, special protection area for birds, serving as habitat for some steppe birds like the great bustard, the little bustard, harriers, etc. This is the reason why the restoration of the lands was a priority.

Context

Due to the poor condition of the area caused by lack of environmental management from the company that used to manage the site, Procosanz Áridos, S.A. has to make a strong environmental statement and effective action in order to save this valuable region.

Solution

A number of actions were carried:

- Dismantlement of the previous facilities which were deserted;

- Withdrawal of the fuel deposits;

- Topographical restitution of the area;

- Sowing and plantation of cereals and trees.

Result

21 hectares have been restored, and the area has been colonized by the targeted species.

The project is finalised and the site is now closed, the biodiversity values are still good or even better.
