Case Study

LafargeHolcim España & Sodira

Madrid, Spain

The Sand Martin (Riparia riparia) is a migratory species, with conservation interest in Europe. Its natural breeding habitats are the banks of rivers, streams and lakes, though in the last decades, the Sand Martin has increased the use of extractive areas as breeding sites, where it now concentrates its main breeding colonies. The objective of this project (developed through a partnership between LafargeHolcim and Sodira, the FIRE Foundation and the University of Alcalá), is to help reconcile extractive activity and the conservation of the Sand Martin both during the active and the restoration phases of aggregate sites, through a guide of best management practices.
