In contrast to other crude materials the deposits are distributed very irregularly and cover a maximum of 10,000 sq m each. Therefore the open-cast quarries have relatively short lifecycles of 5 to 10 years.

For 112 years, the company Hoffmann Mineral from Neuburg on the Danube in Germany has been extracting Neuburg siliceous earth.
