Objective

To minimize the negative environmental impact.

To make models of final scenarios with a high environmental value.

To promote endogenous development, with principles of Social Corporate Responsibility, through cooperation.

Context

The project “Ecomining” has chosen the environment as a key focus, through the design of innovative models, betting for the creation of innovative models generating international sustainable circumstances, looking for environmental improvement beyond the legislation requirements; looking for the strengthen of the endogenous development of the area were the project is being carried out.

Solution

Several actions on different levels were defined, based on:

• Minimizing the negative environmental impact of the activity

- Validation of a prototype that combined diverse “clean technologies", resulting in important savings of water and reducing the slag ponds and their associated issues;

- Validation of a model of “sustainable exploitation” through the application of 15 good environmental practices.

• Creating positive environmental impact

- Installation of an improvement and restoration plan to establish a final situation with high ecological value;

- Application of the CSR principles (Corporate Social Responsibility) to promote the endogenous development of the areas;

- Implantation of soil for agro forestry uses;

- Creation of new natural spaces of leisure for the public environmental awareness.

In 2018, the project was still on-going.

Result

As a global result of the project, a reference model for the sector of aggregates extraction was validated. Demonstration was made that extractive activities, with innovative tools, could be carried out while protecting the environment.
