Case Study

Rådasand AB

Råda, Västra Götaland County, Sweden

Objective

The replacement of fuel oil with biofuel to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and avoid risk of soil contamination.

Context

The gravel extraction site in Rådaås outside Lidköping is operated by Rådasand AB, a subsidiary of Swerock AB, one of Sweden's leading producers of crushed rock products, gravel products and ready-mixed concrete. The sand recovered in Rådaås has unique mineralogical characteristics that make it particularly suitable for use as a mold and core sand for casting or boiler sand (fluidized bed of sand) in heat production.

Actions

The conversion of the drying plant for the operation to bio-oil.

Investigation of different bio-oils from environmental, quality and financial aspects.

The use of pure waste product from the food industry to generate the bio-oil, categorised as carbon neutral.

Result

The reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

Reduction in risk of soil contamination in case of spillage or possible breakdown.
