Lafarge Granulats Sud (Midi Pyrénées Granulats Calcaire)

Objective

Following the extraction of a clay quarry, the site was rehabilitated so that birds could recolonize the rock stiffs.

Context

The Larroque quarry has been operated since the XVII century et allowed the construction of many masterpieces including the Montauban cathedral.

The site is located within a Natura 2000 area.

The rehabilitation plan includes 3 separate areas among which one natural area.

The plans natural area were discussed with the General Council (Assembly of the department), the regional direction of environment, and the local Birds Protection Association.

Solution

Different types of rehabilitation have been implemented, including:

- Maintaining a cliff in its original state (taking into account regulations) so that birds which had already colonized the site could keep evolving in the area.

- Creating an archipelago of ponds with a variety of banks so that the diversity of natural habitats could increase the biological diversity.

Result

Different birds can be observed: wallcreepers (see picture), crag martins, Alpine accentor, etc.

One can see the Eurasian eagle-owl and the nesting of a common kestrel.
