Objective

To implement the KIELO-programme on all NCC extraction sites.

Context

KIELO-programme is NCC’s vision of the integrated biodiversity management system (IBMS). KIELO enhances biodiversity on stone extraction sites. KIELO was launched 2012 from the idea of doing things differently. The innovative approach of the KIELO Programme is to bring an emphasis on biodiversity enhancement during extraction.

Actions

KIELO compiles different methods together. Experimental methods are also conducted. Every method applied is adapted to the unique variations of each environment.

Example: enhance pollination through the installation of two beehives to the Kiuru area.

Result

Protection of biodiversity of the south of Finland.

Restoration of quarries giving place to a new ecosystem in NCC’s Finnish quarries.

Example: Project area Black Lupine is for restricting the spreading and growth of large-leaved lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus) with woodash.
