Objective

To protect and sustain a population of Natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita, formerly Bufo calamita) during the activity of the sand and gravel pit.

Context

The sand and gravel pit is located in proximity of the south-eastern suburbs of Strasburg in the upper Rhine plain.

By including the three adjacent quarries, about 150 hectares are authorized for extraction in the area.

Solution

To create temporary shallow water pools while progressing the extraction of sand and gravel.

These ponds created on barren ground provide the optimum environment for sustaining the Natterjack toad.

Result

These shallow water pools have proved that it eases the reproduction of the Natterjack toad.
