Objective

During the preparation of the first environmental impact statement for the quarry development in 1998, bat species were found roosting in two old stone buildings in the adjoining site.

The bat species recorded were Natterers, Whiskered and Brandt bats.

The objective was to ensure the quarry operation did not impact on these bat species.

Context

The quarry is located in a rural area in the townland of Tromman, circa 2km northwest of Rathmoylan and 6km due south of Trim.

The quarry has been in operation since 2000.

Solution

To ensure the quarry operations did not impact on the bats, CEMEX preserved one of the stone buildings.

Preservation consisted of the construction of a new roof, fencing off of the area and the provision of appropriate signage.

Result

The preserved building housing the bats was preserved and has remained undisturbed since the time of their discovery in 1998.

CEMEX has established links with Bat Conservation Ireland.

This building is now a documented conservation area for the bat species identified above.

Regular surveys are carried out at the site.
