Compañía General de Canteras S.A. - Italcementi Group

Cantera Los Arenales, Mijas, Spain

Objective

The basic aim was to reproduce the Mediterranean surrounding forest, looking for a maximized integration of the restored site.

Context

At the quarry “Los Arenales”, a very good planned restoration has been carried out, giving an important qualitative step to create a final scenario with high ecological value.

An exemplary restoration has been carried out, stressing a carefully selection of the used vegetal species, the process of acclimation of these species in situ; starting from a research made by the Environmental Ministry, the Vegetal Biology of Malaga University and the Mijas city council.

Solution

The maximum integration with the surrounding environment has been pursued, providing a green cover that allows the soil to recover, minimizing the landscape disorders, and promoting at the same time the progressive recovering of the fauna.

Result

This contributed to the recovery of the fauna, keeping in mind that the aim is a more mature ecological succession, a more complex ecosystem with greater biodiversity.

The project is finalised and the site is now closed, the biodiversity values are good or even better.
