Compañía General de Canteras S.A. - Italcementi Group

Cantera “Los Cejos del Inglés”, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain

Objective

The restoration project carried out in 1990 had the purpose of revegetating some areas which were previous quarries and had not been restored yet.

Context

The exploitation is located into an area classified as a natural area; because the previous extractive activities had been carried out by another company, the restoration laws were not created yet.

Solution

The restoration project included 15 hectares of minor species, trees, bushes, herbages, 10 hectares were restored for agricultural uses, and another 8 hectares have been restored as grazing lands.

Result

The developed restoration of lands had the objective of recovering the original conditions of the lands, located nearby the Medina Sidonia lake, and to give the area a recreational and forester use. Many species had colonized the old site, increasing the ecological value of this natural area. The project is finalised and the site is now closed, the biodiversity values are still good or even better.
