The “Upper Weser floodplain landscape” developed a unique natural landscape due to extraction from 1996 to 2016. This is considered as a “secondary natural wonder”. With its long-term connectivity, the Weser provides dynamic habitat that gives high value as a protected area. Its diverse mosaic area is characterised by shallow water zones, reed beds, tall forbs, as well as steep banks, gravel banks and islands. The habitat accommodates various fauna, in particular, rare breeding birds such as sea eagles and common terns, which have successfully settled there. The resulting structures and high development potential of the ecological planning concept after extraction have meant that the area became a nature reserve as early as 2014.
