Latouros Quarries Ltd

Context

The company Latouros Quarries Ltd was founded in 1977.

Since 1990, the company has been involved in continuous investments aiming at increasing its production over the years while satisfying the three main pillars of industrial development: business, quality and environment.

The project

Before the installation of the Recycling Plant, the company was disposing the mud in ponds which were formed in the nearby fields.

Beyond the waste of huge amounts of water, serious environmental issues were caused because of the disposal of the mud in these ponds.

As a result of the installation of this plant the company managed to preserve 90%-95% of the water needed for the washing of the final product and at the same time use the solidified mud for rehabilitation purposes.

The operation of the Recycling Plant gave also the opportunity to the company to reduce the energy consumption since in the past too much energy was needed for pumping the liquefied mud through the several ponds. In general this installation is considered to be a fully integrated Waste Management System.

Result

In 2012 the company was awarded by the Environmental Department of Cyprus a prize for its innovative installation of the recycling Plant, an Award that was presented by the President of Cyprus.
