Objective
Gravel pit and ground water reservoir in Porvoo, Skogsgård. The gravel pit was located in the archipelago of Porvoo in Vessö island. Total size of the gravel pit was approximately 25 hectares and now there is a 9 hectares of ground water reservoir full of clear fresh water. Area is subject toafter-cared during the years 2001 – 2003.
Context
Before using the area as aggregate resources the nature was barren, almost unproductive wooded area. After using the area for aggregates production the landscaping was planned together with the locals and the landowners. Their aim was to use the area for recreation in many new ways.
Solution
Surface of the area was smoothened to fit the environment during after-care. More than 48 000 trees were planted in the area, which were mainly pinetrees. Some larches, birches and common alders were also used. A ground water reservoir was planned to be as deep as 18 meters in order to maintain clear and fresh water.
Result
Around the reservoir there is nowadays a unique biodiversity of plants and especially birds.
